‘Back to school’ like never before

In her September New York Times column, AFT President Randi Weingarten says that going back to school has never looked like it does now. Weingarten explains that because of President Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus, which has been chaotic, contradictory and inept, and the lack of federal guidance and funding, we’re seeing a patchwork of school reopening plans across the country.

Reopening Schools

Local 420 has adopted two main goals for reopening our schools.

First, to make sure that when our schools do reopen they are safe for students, staff, and the students’ families.  In consultation with the St. Louis Department of Health according to CDC guidelines; Our second goal is that our students will receive quality instruction which will result in successful outcomes for them and our community.

Our second goal is that our students will receive quality instruction which will result in successful outcomes for them and our community. No matter whether that instruction in on-line, blended; https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/education/story/2020-05-03/school-districts-may-switch-to-blended-learning-an-area-dominated-by-charter-school, site-based or any combination of the three

To that end, three of our experienced Building Stewards have been appointed to the SLPS Restart School Task Force.  They are:

                    Kathy Gregory/Griscom – Instruction subcommittee

John Moore/Clyde Miller – Facilities & School Operations subcommittee

                    Carron Johnson/Gateway Middle – CoChair/Facilities & School Operations

Local 420 Office Reopening

In case you had not heard, earlier this year our office was flooded.  While mitigating the water out asbestos was discovered and had to be abated by removing all floor covering down to the concrete.  The abatement has been completed and we have contracted to have the flooring replaced by a union company.  If everything goes as scheduled, the office should be open for business by the end of June.  Until then our staff will be working remotely.
