AFT St. Louis was chartered June 11, 1935 as Local 420 with the American Federation of Teachers. The union was integrated BEFORE the St. Louis Public Schools in 1935. AFT national and our Local have stood for diversity and acceptance and against racism and segregation from the start.

There is only one bargaining agent within the St. Louis Public Schools for several categories of employees. Teachers cannot be represented by MNEA or MSTA in negotiaions, grievances or any other areas covered by agreement between SLPS and AFT St. Louis, Local 420. AFT is the only entitry that can represent anyone in the bargaining units. Teachers, Social Wokers, Counselors, Paraprofessionals, Teaching Assitants, ICAs, Safety Officers are all AFT. MSTA has no legal standing in St. Louis Public Schools.

In a historic decision on May 29, the Missouri Supreme Court gave public employees, including teachers, the right to bargain collectively with employers. The ruling supports Article 1, Section 29 in the Missouri Constitution, which provides “That employees shall have the right to organize and bargain collectively through representatives of their own choosing.” MORE
