Reading Opens the World

Reading is a foundational skill necessary for virtually everything we do. It opens possibilities for all children to succeed—to learn and grow, to explore and imagine, to investigate and verify, and to lead fulfilling lives. Reading well instills confidence and helps reduce inequities. The disruptions due to the pandemic make focusing on literacy even more important, to assist our students not just to catch up but to thrive.

The American Federation of Teachers is launching Reading Opens the World, a new initiative that focuses on:

Loan Forgiveness for AFT Members Only!!!

As word spreads that student debt relief for public service workers is actually within reach, the AFT is connecting with members to ensure they get on that path to discharging all their school loans. Along with student debt clinics and a tailored debt relief guide called Summer the union used an Oct. 26 Facebook live townhall to reach hundreds of members with details about how to take advantage of changing policy and get out from under student debt.

“Our goal is to make sure that everyone sees a zero balance in their student debt account,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten.

Local 420 partnered with GOTVax, STLVax, Commercial Cleaning by Citchen, STL Artworks and the Dr. Fredrick Echols, Director of St. Louis City Health Department to create a vaccination drive. Participants were able to get vaccinations, booster shots, gift cards and school supplies. AFT Local 420 is concerned about members, Saint Louis Public School employees, students and everyone in the community. Thank you all for making this drive a success.
