AFT St. Louis, Local 420’s Statement on St. Louis Public Schools Instructional Support Centers

Your union’s mission includes keeping the children and our members as safe as reasonably possible, as well as, keeping everyone gainfully employed during this unprecedented pandemic. Since March, we have worked tirelessly to mitigate risk from COVID-19 and to continue with full employment for all of our members by meeting, conferring and negotiating with the district.

SLPS has decided to open Instructional Support Centers (ISC’s) which will provide in-person support to students at each site. Local 420 insisted and the district agreed to ensure that conditions at the centers will meet and surpass all CDC guidelines for reopening schools. Furthermore, with respect to staffing of these centers the district agreed to create new voluntary positions that take into account the conditions of the work at the centers and pay fair reasonable monetary compensation to those who chose to take on this work.

The Virtual Learning Associate and Instructional Support Center Coordinator positions will exist as long as the District is 100% virtual and once we return to in person schooling, the employees in those positions will return to their regular positions and pay without any break in seniority.

We hope and pray that you are staying safe and if you choose to participate in working at one of these centers that these new voluntary positions will meet your needs while serving the needs of the children of our community.
