2nd Special Session: Week Two!

This week we conclude the second week in the ongoing Special Legislative Session, bringing us to nearly the half way point. Due to the oncoming Hurricane Delta, some meetings were moved up until earlier in the week, most notably both the House Education and Senate Education Committees conducted their weekly meetings at the same time on Wednesday morning. They both considered important legislation, but here are some of the highlights:

City Union of Baltimore Responds to DPW Layoffs

The Baltimore city Mayor has announced privatization efforts that would result in more than 60 Baltimore city employees losing their jobs. The City Union of Baltimore issued the following statement in response.

Baltimore, MD - CUB is baffled at the Mayor's decision to lay off more than five dozen DPW employees. Our members provide a vital service to the city and we are blindsided by this decision. Ultimately, the decision invites more questions than it does provide answers. One question we have is why our members who were on permission leave on account of the Coronavirus, were not put back to work with the necessary personal protective equipment, to provide accurate and timely readings for Baltimore city and county residents. The day begins as most days do. You get ready to go to work, you go to work, and you begin working….when…suddenly…someone approaches you and says, “I’m here from Human Resources and I need to speak with you. Or you may receive a phone call, directing you to report to Human Resources.
 

#Strike Vote!!!

Hospital management gave us an ultimatum to accept or reject their “best” offer. The offer does not address our priorities, and we are rejecting it. Management has also continued to violate the law and commit unfair labor practices.  We believe it is time to take a stand for PPE, wage equity, safe patient limits and decent healthcare. A super-majority of nurses have said they want to strike. That’s why the negotiation committee has decided to call for a strike vote!
