Recently, some phone scams have surfaced targeting seniors. In one the caller identifies themselves as an IRS agent. Remember—the IRS never calls, they communicate by mail. Never give out social security numbers or bank information even if the caller is using IRS ID numbers and official sounding titles. If you get a call like this, hang up and call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-8477. All calls are kept anonymous.
Members from the Maryland Professional Employees Council and AFT-Maryland staff met with a goal of developing ways to strengthen the union and increase membership and activism. The group discussed various ideas and exchanged best practices. Many of the suggestions have been effective in rallying and activating members.

We are happy to report that Gemma is back in the office full time this semester. Joining her as office staff are Lori Shoemaker, Andrea Kusanovich, and Terri Eves-Knudsen, who are released part time, and remain in the classroom (or library) part time.

Five Shakopee Public Schools teachers are among the 114 candidates for the Minnesota Teacher of the Year Award for 2016. The names were released by Education Minnesota on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 (press release).

The Baltimore AFL-CIO will decide which candidate will receive Labor's endorsement for Mayor of Baltimore. The unions of the AFT-Maryland, including the Baltimore Teachers Union, the City Union of Baltimore, and other state and county unions, will help make that decision.
